"Susan Montez...makes poetry from lived and spoken language. She isn't for librarians, pastoralists, or conservatives of any persuasion―unless they burst with a secret, unexpressed, snazzy character that is as much costumed as revealed."―The Southern Review"synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
Susan Montez was a poet and English professor at Norwalk Community College.
These poems seem broadcast--not to a European war zone behind an iron curtain of Communism but to a danger zone in Queens, New York, behind a dingy lace curtain of chronic yearning for the right job, the right man, the right address, the right life. Montez crosses borders and boundaries both national and emotional, chronicling a world of subway snipers, the .357 Magnum her father gave her for protection, and the divorced homicide detective-poet with a good pension and major medical insurance who, unfortunately, drinks too much and, sadly, turns out to be just another drunk with a gun. "Danger's everywhere," she concludes. She limns the lives of working-class women fighting to be free in personal and political war zones in which "the clocks are set ahead so dusk never falls before midnight." Whitney Scott
