9780807751732: Teaching with Vision: Culturally Responsive Teaching in Standards-Based Classrooms

''Through these teaching stories, Sleeter and Cornbleth demonstrate the kind of rich intellectual life and curiosity that we need to create the schools our children deserve...This work is culturally sensitive, critically astute, and absolutely essential for teachers and teacher educators today.'' --From the Foreword by Bill Bigelow, Rethinking Schools magazine, and Linda Christensen, Lewis and Clark College
''Sleeter and Cornbleth have assembled an inspiring collection wherein educators' provocative stories shatter assumptions associated with what it means to teach in high-stakes, standards-based classrooms. Teaching with Vision is a must-read book for beginning and practicing teachers.'' --Brian D. Schultz, Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, author of Spectacular Things Happen Along the Way
In Teaching with Vision, two respected scholars in teaching for social justice have gathered teachers from across the country to describe rich examples of extraordinary practice. This collection showcases the professional experience and wisdom of classroom teachers who have been navigating standards- and test-driven teaching environments in California and New York, without losing their vision of what teaching can be. Representing diverse backgrounds, schools, grade levels, subject areas, and specialties, these teachers talk personally about their practice, their challenges, and how they learned to maintain a social and pedagogical vision for their work. This book is essential reading for new teachers who are struggling to make their teaching inspiring, creative, and culturally responsive, especially those who are working in less than supportive environments.

''A must read for all new teachers and prospective teachers...Essential.'' --CHOICE Magazine

''For new teachers, this book offers vision and possibility for one's future classroom with the thoughtful support of people who have been where you are. For veteran teachers, it offers curricular possibilities as well as invitations to consider their individual stances as a learner and teacher. The teachers in this volume demonstrate the resilient nature of career educators who are not only passionate about what they teach, but who they teach.'' --Language Arts Magazine
