The good of society - which grows out of the ethical traditions of the community - provides the authority for collective action, as well as the basis for Luntley's reflections on freedom, justice, democracy, and citizenship. Luntley argues that capitalism, by equating values with preferences, destroys the community's vision of the common social good. Similarly, the liberal tradition in politics, philosophy, and economics, in equating the good of the community with the sum of individual satisfactions, is unable to provide a coherent rationale for social interference with individual choices. Casual readers interested in events in Eastern Europe, or issues of class, state ownership, or planning, will find little of interest here.
