First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Printing. 206 Pages Indexed. No defects noted and interior text pages are free of marks. The author has written a new defense of socialism. He is not concerned with the policies of a socialist government, but to demonstrate the moral inadequacy of the free market and to justify interference with individual choices for the benefit of society. He refuses to equate socialism with any specific methods, such as the discredited policies of centralized state planning or nationalization, but instead identifies socialism with a morally informed vision. In Lumley's view socialism is centered on the conviction that there is such a thing as the good life, independent of people's current preferences or opinions. Luntley insists that there is more to the good life than pluralism and individualism of liberal theory. He shows that the good is something over and above what the various individuals in society happen to seek after at anyone time. Liberal theories are foredoomed since they commence from the position that only the preferences of individuals count in determining the good, and that all goods are alike subject to negotiated trade-offs. According to Lumley, the social basis of the good life lies in the traditions handed down by our communities and conveyed by reference groups. These traditions are corrupted and eroded by free-market capitalism. Socialism acts to enable the re-emergence and flourishing of those reference groups which carry the traditions of thought and feeling vital for the living of the good life. Along with his searing ethical indictment of capitalism, Luntley seriously questions many traditional socialist assumptions, including the over-emphasis on class, equality, justice, and rights. The author teaches philosophy at the London School of Economics.
