"Over 2,500 quotations by more that 500 African Americans will inform, inspire, and provoke readers lucky enough to pick up a copy of this book. Whether the goal is answering a reference question, or invigorating a talk or a report, or just browsing, the book will meet that goal....Access, through separate indexes by name, subject, and occupation of author couldn't be easier. This collection encourages meandering through the thoughts of famous and little-known African Americans....By turns inspirational, "Every try will not suceed. If you live, your business is trying," (Oliver Killens) and funny, "One never knows, do one?" (Fats Waller on reality, ) this effervescent compendium will have heavy use....Strongly recommended."-MultiCultural Review
"This extensive collection is the first of its kind to be organized by subject area for ease of reference."-Blackwell's
"The focus on African Americans (rather than people of color from all nations) makes this unique. Recommended."-Library Journal
"Unlike many books of quotations, this one is amazingly easy to use....All libraries should welcome this reference as a valuable resource in African American literature."-ARBA
"From one-liners to short paragraphs, more than 2,500 mainly twentieth-century quotations from 500 individuals are accessible by name, subject, and occupation indexes."-Booklist/RBB
"The work is refreshingly straightforward and easy to use....Browsing these pages will stimulate the desire to discover more about the characters and works of those quoted. This work fills a niche and is recommended for all libraries."-Choice
"He does, however, understand the importance of access and provides name and occupation indexes (citing quotations by entry number) and, even though the book is arranged topically, a subject index. This last is very useful since some quotes touch on more that one topic."-Rettig On Reference
