This title is part of the publisher's European Nations series. A boon for any student of European area studies, the series provides information accessible for grades nine through college.
Each volume in the series begins with a historical survey from the Renaissance to the present. The next section is a historical dictionary in A-Z format of people, events, and places that figure prominently in the political, social, and cultural history of the country. Other sections include chronologies of major dates, maps, and lists of rulers and statesmen. Each volume also includes a bibliography--in the case of the Italy guide, this is substantial, classified listing of works.
The major portion of every volume is the historical dictionary. Each entry consists of a 300- to 500-word essay. Biographical entries include birth and death dates as well as a summary sentence of the biographee's importance in addition to the narrative. Portraits accompany some of the biographical entries. Numerous see references aid navigation.
This and other titles in the European Nations series will be a good first stop for any high-school or college student studying the historical events and ideas that make a nation's modern history. When writing a research paper or preparing for a debate, these volumes should be consulted often for quick facts or for a summary of the grand sweep of history. Recommended for public, high-school, and college libraries. Jerry Carbone
