The Facts On File Dictionary of Biochemistry is part of the 15-volume Facts On File Science Dictionaries set. Written in clear, easy-to-understand language, basic terminology and concepts are covered in entries that range in length from one sentence to several paragraphs.
General areas included in the Dictionary of Biochemistry are basic organic and physical chemistry, classes of compounds, cytology and histology, nutrition and metabolism, and natural-product chemistry. Examples of specific entries are Beta-pleated sheet; Cyanobacteria; Enzyme; G protein; Guanine; Isomerase; McClintock, Barbara; Pollution; Sex determination; Sugar; Vector ; and Zeolite. Appendixes provide a chronology of major events in the development of biochemistry and molecular biology, a table of the genetic code, amino acid structures, the periodic table, chemical elements, the Greek alphabet, and suggested Web pages.
Black-and-white line drawings supplement the text. The volume concludes with a short bibliography. Aimed at high-school students taking advanced placement science courses, this dictionary could also be useful to students enrolled in introductory college courses.
