Reviews

Grade 8 Up - For students inclined to consider the Renaissance as primarily an artistic phenomenon, this volume provides a broader cultural and historical framework. Tracing this unique period of optimism and intellectual expression from its origins in late-14th-century Florence, through the rest of Italy, to its culmination in 16th-century Europe, the text is organized into 11 roughly chronological chapters prefaced by a time line and concluding with an appendix of genealogical tables and an essential index. Coverage includes important places, events, and ideas of the time as well as profiles of important figures, along with full-color portraits, maps, diagrams, photographs, and art reproductions. Though most chapters begin with a large readable map, and additional key maps can be found in each chapter, they are so judiciously melded with text and other illustrative material that the "atlas" is almost secondary to the history. Combining a concise and engaging narrative with plenty of striking visuals, this is a solid resource for Western Civilization studies. - Mary Ann Carcich, Hampton Bays Public Library, NY
