Synopsis

This Encyclopedia explains a complex group of medical and psychological disorders by detailing recognized learning disabilities and how to identify them, providing information on obtaining a diagnosis, and discussing how to find the best treatments and aids. More than 650 A-to-Z entries cover all the relevant topics, from special legislation to educational tools to child development. Appendixes listing important organizations, government information sources, assistive technology resources, and relevant books and Web sites make this the most comprehensive handy reference on learning disabilities available.

Reviews

Responding to changes in what is known about a variety of learning disorders, the authors have updated their 2002 work of the same name. With revisions ranging from slightly embellished definitions (Bilateral motor coordination, Resource teacher ) to longer, more fully developed entries on serious issues (Shaken baby syndrome ), and the addition of topics such as Autism spectrum disorders and Feingold diet, this edition offers a wealth of information useful to teachers, health-care providers, and parents as they seek to communicate and learn about particular developmental and learning problems.

The approximately 600 entries are written for understanding and clarity, never hiding behind unnecessary jargon while remaining professional in tone. Learning-disorder descriptions, contributing issues, and management have a vocabulary derived from education, psychology, anatomy, physiology, medicine, and sociology, if not more. Therefore, Basal ganglia and Basal readerare adjacent, as are Multiple disabilities and Multiple intelligences and Semantic network and Semantics. Following the A-Z entries are six highly useful appendixes--among them lists of national organizations, assistive-technology resources, and hotlines--and a bibliography of books of interest to people with learning disabilities, with suggestions for children, college-age individuals, adults, and parents. These reading lists are short but pertinent. A brief glossary, a bibliography of professional resources, and an index complete the work.

This revised edition is recommended for academic and large public libraries. Even the many libraries owning the first edition should consider its purchase. Linda Loos Scarth
