Reviews

This book's stated purpose is to give both the professional and the patient a tool for finding reliable health information on the Internet. Web sites in more than 40 categories are reviewed by subject experts, mostly nurses but also two health science librarians who contribute to the introductory chapter. These experts were asked to select one to six sites and review them for relevance to consumers using five evaluation criteria: authority/source, purpose/objectivity, content, currency, and design. Written in narrative form, the reviews follow a structured outline. In addition, each chapter begins with an introduction that often includes key points to consider when evaluating sites related to the topic, one of the book's most useful features. An appendix indexes the sites by title, including the URL and an indication of languages other than English. This guide serves as an excellent introduction to consumer health resources on the web. It is definitely a better value than the expensive Patient Resources on the Internet (Faulkner & Gray, 1997), which is more about the topic than a directory. However, for quick reference on specific topics, one would do better to search MEDLINEplus (http://medlineplus.gov) or one of the other general sites recommended by this book, by the Medical Library Association Top 10 (http://www.mlanet.org/resources/ medspeak/topten.html), or by Websites You Can Trust from the Consumer and Patient Health Information Section of MLA (http:// caphis.mlanet.org/consumer/index.html). Nevertheless, this is particularly useful for students or those new to the web, and it is recommended for all libraries seeking a current reference work on this topic, especially those designing consumer health web sites.
