McCormick describes this book, written for the general reader, as setting Jesus' "verifiable humanity against popular notions of his divinity." His awareness of his audience and the problem posed by the form in which the book is cast accounts for the apologetic tone with which he prefaces much of the material. Although partly warranted, that tone may make it difficult to find and hold an audience. The book's greatest strength is its "popular" presentation of a large and diverse body of scholarly research dealing with the humanity of Jesus. Readers who care deeply about that humanity and who are not familiar with the research are likely to find the material both challenging and interesting. Since those same readers are likely to care about "divinity" with equal depth and to find it difficult to disentangle questions about "humanity" from convictions about "divinity," they will need to exercise considerable patience to stick with McCormick to the end. Their patience will be rewarded, though, with a deeper appreciation of the humanity not only of Jesus but also of
