Betsy Byars is a widely read and loved author of many award-winning middle-grade books for children, including Summer Of The Swans (Viking), a 1971 Newbery Medal winner. The Pinballs was an ALA Notable Children's Book in 1977 as well as the basis for an ABC Afterschool Special. Other books she has written for HarperCollins are Good-bye, Chicken Little; The Seven Treasure Hunts, illustrated by Jennifer Barrett; and three I Can Read Books, the popular The Golly Sisters Go West, Hooray For The Golly Sisters!, and The Golly Sisters Ride Again, all illustrated by Sue Truesdell. Ms. Byars lives in Clemson, South Carolina, with her husband.
Sue Truesdell has illustrated many children's books, including How to Talk to Your Dog by Jean Craighead George and Betsy Byars's I Can Read! series about the adventuresome Golly Sisters. Ms. Truesdell lives in Tenafly, New Jersey.
First introduced in The Golly Sisters Go West (Harper, 1985), May-May and Rose return in this zany comedy sure to delight emerging readers. Varying levels of humor make the title appealing to slightly older, less able readers as well. Truesdell's fluid watercolor illustrations enhance and expand on each episode as the sisters continue west in their covered wagon, giving shows wherever they go. Their audiences are filled with people of varying shapes, colors, and sizes. The adventuresome gals' pioneer spirit and sibling affection are convincing and true to life, but most of all, the stories are full of gentle fun. A winning book that will attract primary-aged readers again and again. --Sharron McElmeel, Cedar Rapids Community Schools, IA
