Written for those who believe that today's typically landscaped home is wasteful and ecologically inefficient, this book preaches a low-tech approach to gardening. Creasy ( The Complete Book of Edible Landscaping ) describes the practical virtues of growing indigenous wild plants and old-fashioned nonhybrid varieties, in low-maintenance (or at least lesser-maintenance) settings. The emphasis throughout is on the philosophy of ecologically responsible gardening rather than how-to-do-it. The 12 theme gardens presented include gardens of edibles, gardens that re-create the natural habitat, and a ``child's garden.''
