Lucas ( Saga of the Modern Olympic Games , LJ 3/15/80) aims "to illuminate virtually all aspects of the Olympic Games and the larger entity, the Olympic movement." Following a review of the games' origins, he examines at length major issues facing the organizers today, including nationalism, site and event selection, administrative restructuring, substance abuse, media influence, sexism, and the trend toward corporate sponsorship. A balance must be struck between a pragmatic and idealistic approach to the games, he contends, and the movement can only meet future challenges by adopting a less compartmentalized, more integrated structure. This well-documented study should appeal to students of the Olympic movement and libraries rounding out subject collections replete with record books.
