Designed to empower students of dance, this text seeks to inspire creative thinking, reasoning skills, and self expression. Through the use of examples and exercises based on non-studio experiences, the book aims to help students frame the art of dance within the context of life. Part I explores the way the body is used for expression and the ways the elements of dance are instinctively applied in daily life. Part II begins with an overview of dance exploration basics and then expands into a discussion of the three major elements of movement - time, space, and effort. Part III introduces the concepts of perception and body intelligence as students are encouraged to explore and develop their own creative resources. Finally, in Part IV the art of creating a dance is seen as the art of making a statement.

Constance Schrader is an independent artist and dance lecturer at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. She received her master’s degree in dance from Mills College in Oakland, California, in 1979. Schrader is a member of the North Carolina Dance Alliance and Alternate ROOTS, a national organization of performing artists.
Throughout her dance career she has been awarded many grants and scholarships, including consecutive scholarships to attend the American Dance Festival. She also has worked as an associate director of the Wallstreet Danceworks dance company and is affiliated with Silent Partners, a regional movement theater company.
In addition to teaching, choreographing, and performaing nationally and internationally for more than 25 years, Connie has a rich variety of real-life experiences that have helped her make dance accessible to a wide range of people. In fact, her greatest sense of accomplishment doesn't come from diplomas or awards, but from teaching 3,000 Japanese to clap a rhythm at a festival in Togamura and coaxing U.S. executives to loosen their ties, kick off their shoes, leap, and laugh.
Schrader lives in Asheville, North Carolina, with her husband, Clayton, and their children where she pursues her other passion--gardening.
