This is a detailed, narrative-style history of the Boston Marathon by a 14-time competitor in the event. An amazing amount of research went into this volume, which is arranged chronologically. Information regarding each year's race includes the size of the field, the weather at race time, the prerace favorites, the winners, and the winning times. Profiles of the top runners entered, from the marathon's beginnings in 1897 to the present, adds human interest value to the book. The author presents the information in a very readable and entertaining style. However, only race participants or students of running will find appeal in this book. Suitable for regional libraries and those with large collections on running and fitness.
