Paul Bowles was born in 1910 and studied music with composer Aaron Copland before moving to Tangier, Morocco. A devastatingly imaginative observer of the West's encounter with the East, he is the author of four highly acclaimed novels: The Sheltering Sky, Let It Come Down, The Spider's House, and Up Above the World. In addition to being one of the most powerful postwar American novelists, Bowles was an acclaimed composer, a travel writer, a poet, a translator, and a short story writer. He died in Morocco in 1999.

Inscribed on the half title page "Paul Bowles / for Bob Hines / Tangier / 26/XI/90" (NOTE: He probably meant 1980, the year of publication). He and his partner Jack Frick lived in New Orleans and in 1965 Williams suggested they visit Bowles in Tangier: "You'll adore Janie [Bowles], and I've no doubt Paul's New England reserve will relax before your mannerly Southern charm.Things are cheap there. Bootleg liquor is $2.50 for a quart of the best Scotch. A piece of ass is two bucks and the swimming is great in the summer. You must go see them." In 1983 Hines served as a pallbearer at Williams' funeral. Light shelf wear and fading to bottom of boards. Still in the original acetate cover. Signed by Author(s). Book.
