Synopsis

William Lee Stokes was born and raised in east-central Utah, a region well suited to the study of geology. He attended Brigham Young University and received the B.S. degree in 1937 and the M.S. degree in 1938. He attended Princeton University and took the Ph.D. degree in 1941. His professional career began with employment by the United States Geological Survey. He remained with that organization for seven years, working primarily in the Colorado Plateau region. His career in the academic field began in 1947 when he began teaching at the University of Utah. He has been teaching there for 32 years, and served as Head of the Department of Geology for 13 years. Lee's geological interests center chiefly in Utah were he has studied uranium deposits, dinosaurs, and development of scenery. He has written extensively on these and other subjects. His two textbooks, Essentials of Earth History and Introduction to Geology (with two co-authors) are widely used. He is a member of ten scientific societies and is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West, American Men and Women of Science, World Who's Who of Science and Contemporary Authors. He is an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and Mrs. Stokes are the parents of four daughters and one son.
