By popular demand, Dr. Clare B. Jones has written a sequel to her highly successful Resourcebook for Children with Attention Deficit Disorder. This book, Attention Deficit Disorder: Strategies for School-Age Children, follows children from first grade to their completion of a college degree or vocational training certificate and into adulthood. This valuable resource blends Dr. Jones' sensitivity and respect for children with a set of proven and practical strategies that focus on helping these students become educated.
Dr. Jones also challenges adults to change the negative messages that they unwittingly convey to children who struggle with attention deficit every day. The volume focuses on what teachers must stop doing instead of what they must do. Up to 80 percent of statements made to these students are about things they forgot to do, are doing wrong, or failed at Rather than focusing on what is wrong with these children, Dr. Jones draws on their strengths to build their self-esteem and teach them strategies and coping skills. The resulting educational approach enriches all children and helps them learn, whether or not they have special needs. Through classroom accommodations and a variety of instructional approaches, teachers can individualize instruction to their students' learning activities without relying on one-on-one instruction and extensive individual attention.
Much of the information is summarized in handouts that can be given to the person with attention deficit or to his or her family. An added bonus in this text is a section dealing with adult ADHD. This manual also includes lists of resources, support groups, national organizations, and newsletters that can be passed on to clients and their families.
