Reviews

Grade 5-8-- Roxie is having problems. She lies to her parents on several occasions; her grandmother may be seriously ill; her pushy relatives try to invade her home; her father is an embarrassment to her; she behaves badly toward the members of the odd job co-op to which she belongs; etc. At the root of all her difficulties is her typically adolescent, total self-centeredness. However, she comes from a strong, close family and has better friends than she realizes. With their help and understanding, Roxie makes amends. This book has a strong Christian theme: the family prays together about their concerns; Roxie'sfriends talk to her about their prayers for her; they discuss asking God for guidance. Roxie's family also talks about the fact that they have not been close to God and want to correct that. Roxie and her father are well-developed, real characters; the others, less so. The ``King's Kids'' members with whom Roxie shares a ``Best Friend Pact'' stop just short of being too sweet to be real. This is one of the better Christian books available. --Nancy P.
