Provides information on apprenticeship programs in a variety of industries, from abestos workers and bricklayers to railroad workers and welders

A compilation of practical data about more than 1800 apprenticeships in more than 76 job categories from carpentry to embalming and cosmetology, this unique resource fills a gap in the occupational literature. Intended for individuals focusing on noncollege options, it combines how-to information with program data in essay and directory formats, divided in four sections. The first section describes the workings and requirements of apprenticeships and advises on applying for a position along with sample letters. The second and third sections, identifying traditional and nontraditional programs, are the bulk of this easy-to-use work. While the second features a guide to more than 350 traditional job titles, arranged alphabetically first by job title and then by state followed by local and regional sponsors, the third furnishes a similar listing of nontraditional apprenticeships. Each entry includes program address and telephone number; description: length, salary, level of competition, and application filing information; and requirements: age, residency, education, other qualifications, and necessary documents. The last section consists of appendixes and indexes. It provides a glossary of terms, addresses for state employment services and regional, state, and local offices of the Bureau of Apprenticeship Training and for state Apprenticeship Councils, a listing of relevant DOT job titles and classification numbers and indexes by state, organizational classification, and job title. Recommended for school, public, and community college libraries.
