Gr 4-7-Stewart posits that Berners-Lee's invention has had as important an impact on society as Gutenberg's movable type in the 1400s. His parents worked on the Ferranti Mark I, the first general-purpose computer built for commercial use. She goes on to describe other early influences on the inventor. After he graduated from Oxford University in 1976, he soon became a consultant at CERN, a famous Physics lab in Switzerland. He not only developed the Web, but also the browser, server, HTML, etc. The text explains how the Web has continued to evolve and impact society. The book closes with a time line; information on how to become a computer programmer, including a description of the job, educational requirements, employment opportunities, etc. Black-and-white photos of average quality illustrate the places and people mentioned in the text. This interesting combination of biography and career guide should have strong appeal for students.
