Systemic lupus erythematosus is a mysterious autoimmune disorder that is nearly always painful, often disfiguring, and sometimes fatal. Aladjem is a lupus sufferer herself (though she has been in remission for many years) and a student of the disease who has written several books on the subject, including the autobiographical The Sun Is My Enemy (1973). She has compiled 40 articles written by lupus experts that cover a wide variety of topics, including a basic overview of the disease, the effects of lupus on different facets of life, the various manifestations of the disease, diagnosis and medications used to treat lupus, and the doctor-patient relationship. The language throughout is easy enough for the general reader to follow, though some of the contributors write with more clarity than others. The glossary and index are very well done, and there is an exhaustive list of local chapters of the Lupus Foundation of America. Perhaps because so many different authors contributed to the book, or perhaps because of the ambiguous nature of lupus itself, the book seems oddly disjointed; chapters do not flow easily into one another, and the conclusion does not effectively sum up the contents.
