This volume comprises edited contributions presented at the Fourth International Conference on Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Engineering, held in Cambridge, England, in July, 1989. The book contains the papers concerned with the applications of advances in artificial intelligence to design research and development. The nine sections cover structural, mechanical and architectural design, qualitative reasoning in design, design research groups, constraint-based systems in design, design modeling, and processes in design.
