Two or more singular subjects taken separately require a singular verb. Subjects are taken separately, when connected by or, nor, but, as well as, and not, if not--also when preceded by each, every, or no. "The driver was called, and the children put in the carriage." Write the above sentence. What auxiliary is used with the last participle put?--The omission of the auxiliary before put would be right, if the same auxiliary were required with put as with called--that is, was.
