By what words are the subjects connected? In the fifth sentence, what adjective precedes the subjects connected by and? Are the verbs in these sentences singular or plural? Two or more singular subjects taken separately require a singular verb. Subjects are taken separately, when connected by or, nor, but, as well as, and not, if not--also when preceded by each, every, or no. "The driver was called, and the children put in the carriage." Write the above sentence. What auxiliary is used with the last participle put?--The omission of the auxiliary before put would be right, if the same auxiliary were required with put as with called--that is, was. But, as children is plural, was put would be wrong. We must therefore supply the proper auxiliary, were--" The driver was called, and the children were put in the carriage."
