At the sale you were the only one who said a kind word to me and now--" "Do you think the water will get any higher?" she quickly asked. "No. But I don't care--just so you are here." "Hold the umbrella, Abner, and I'll pour you another cup of coffee. It's not very warm but it's better than nothing." He held the umbrella over her as far as he could hold his arm and wished that his arm were longer. It was a commonplace matter--pouring a cup of coffee--but somehow as she did it Abner forgot about his unwashed and unshaven face and uncombed hair and admired the girl at his side, her graceful ways, her sweet, earnest face. It made him glad that his better intentions had conquered and that he had saved the dam, if only for a few moments of her devoted attention.
