Before I go any further into the business prospects of the United Company, allow me to hold up before your view a picture that will give you an idea of the great central city in miniature. You probably went to the great World's Fair at Chicago? Yes, well, if you took the necessary time, and were observing, you saw there, gathered together, the machines necessary for forwarding almost every necessary manufacturing industry in the world. In other words, you saw a miniature manufacturing plant capable of producing almost every manufactured product that humanity needs. With this plant, all that the most fastidious taste could desire could be produced. Now, what does this miniature manufacturing world, which combines the greatest skill and inventive genius of mankind, foreshadow? It foreshadows the possibility of a future great " Metropolis," where these machines, multiplied to the necessary requirements to supply the wants of our whole population, are each brought together in its own vast manufacturing establishment at one central point contingent to the great centre of population. In fact, the great exposition at Chicago, especially that part devoted to manufacturing and liberal arts, is an embryo illustration of the future great manufacturing centre of North America,--a perpetual World's Fair, and educator of the people; each separate machine but an integral part of the whole vast industrial machine of the people.
