Not illustrated. 1872 edition. Excerpt: ... 498 TKX THIRD Ixpeditiow. CHAPTER XXXIX DR. LIVINGSTONE'S LAST EXPEDITION TO ArRIOA. Dr. Livingstone left England on his third tour of exploration August 14th, 1865. From England he went to Paris, and from Paris to Bombay, and from thence to Zanzibar. He thence, on March 28th, 1866, crossed to the mainland, and started for the interior by way of Rovuma. His object was to push, by way of the Rovuma, to the northern extremity of Lake Nyassa. In this expedition, he was aided by the government, and waB given consular autherity, having been appointed Consul for Inner Africa. In December, a number of the natives whe had accompanied him, returned and stated that he had been killed by a party of Mazitus, on the shere of Lake Nyassa. This news was sent to the English Government by Dr. Seward, the British Political Resident at Zanzibar, in a letter to Lord Stanley, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. The letter was dated December 10th, 1866, and gave quite a detailed account of Dr. Livingstone's death. The man whe reported that he had been able most wonderfully to escape, narrated the particulars of the contest in which the Doctor lost his life with great particularity of detail. According to this account, the date of Livingstone's death was placed about the middle of September. The native whe gave this account was also examined by Dr. Kirk, of Zanzibar, whe wrote a full description of his examination. The account was, hewever, not believed universally. Dr. Livingstone's friend, Sir Roderick Impey Murchison, the President of the Reyal Geographical Socicty, and at whese instance chiefly Livingstone had undertaken this last exploration, disbelieved the story.
