Occasionally some of them were canght and appropriated; and not unfrequeutly when guilty of breaking into fields and destroying tho growing crops, they were shot down without mercy. Some few remained in the woods until very near the close of tho last century. Mrs. Alexander Fossctt, who died in 18CO, remembered to have seen at one time, about 1783, a dozeu or more of them feeding together near the head of Long Cove.1 'Tradition. John Fonsott, Wm. Haekolton. 'UM. Oen. Reg., vol. xxiv, p. 100. Bears and other wild animals were not uncommon until about the beginning of the present century. James Sproul, who died in the Long Cove district only a year or two ago, when a child, was once canght by-a bear and considerably injured. He was about six years old, and in company with a sister and another girl, both older than himself, was passing through the woods in the Fountain neighborhood, when their attention was attracted by the squealing of a large pig which a bear had canght and was holding fust. Sproul, supposing the animal to be a big dog rushed at him to drive him off, when Bruin leaving the pig canght hold of the boy, and probably would have done him more serious injury but for the interference of his small dog, which opportunely joined in the fray! The bear jumped at the dog, at the same time dropping the boy, who then made his escape. Though cousiderably injured he soon entirely recovered. The occurrence probably took place about 1794.
