She was his captive.

As soon as the tall, handsome Spaniard leaned down from his stallion to offer her a rose, Caralee McConnell knew California held danger. But all too quickly she was forced to deny the heat Ramon de la Guerra had sparked. Determined to please her uncle who had saved her from poverty, she must resign herself to marrying a man he has chosen for her...and ignore what is in her heart.

He was the one man she was forbidden to have...

Behind Ramon's dark eyes throbbed the memory of his lands, stolen by the beautiful Americana's uncle. He had sworn to reclaim them―riding by night as the ruthless outlaw, El Dragón. In a moment of rage and revenge, he stole Caralee away to his mountain lair...but there, in a passion as sweet as California wine, he would reveal a secret that could cost him his life―and his heart's freedom―in Midnight Rider.

"Kat Martin dishes up sizzling passions and true love."―Los Angeles Daily News

About the Author:
Currently living in Missoula, Montana, Kat Martin is the bestselling author of over fifty historical and romantic suspense novels, including Nothing But Velvet, Innocence Undone, and the Raines of Wind Canyon Series―Against the Wind, Against the Fire, and Against the Law. More than fifteen million of her books are in print and she has been published in twenty-one foreign countries, including Japan, France, Greece, Argentina, China, and Spain. Before she started writing, Kat was a real estate broker. During that time, she met her husband, L. J. Martin, also an author. Kat is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she majored in anthropology and also studied history. "I love anything old," Kat says. "I love to travel and especially like to visit the places where my books are set. My husband and I often stay in out-of-the-way inns and houses built in times past. It's fun and it gives a wonderful sense of a by-gone era."
From Publishers Weekly:
Martin's latest (after Devil's Prize) explores the aftermath of the Mexican-American War and its effect on California circa 1850. The nebulous laws aimed at settling land disputes between the Mexican Californios and the Americanos allowed some Anglos to steal vast quantities of California land. This story is about one such Anglo-Caralee McConnell's uncle-who has staked a claim to Rancho del Robles, the ranch owned for centuries by Ramon de la Guerra's family. Ramon, determined to "set things right, to find justice with or without the Anglo law," fights back under the guise of El Dragon. A midnight raid on the ranch nets him Caralee, who becomes his unwilling hostage and later his unwanted bride. Despite a contrived and predictable ending, the author's colorful overview of the awakening of California, its people and their way of life makes this a worthwhile read.
