About the Author:
The author, George Cary Eggleston (1839-1911) is distinguished for both his fiction and non-fiction work. Although George Cary Eggleston was brought up in a northern state, he bore one of the fine old Virginia names. He inherited an Amelia County plantation in Virginia when he was an educated, but poor orphan at the age of seventeen. Affectionately welcomed by his Virginia kin, he became a steadfast and dedicated “adopted” Virginian. Eggleston served in the War Between the States as JEB Stuart’s clerk, and in the artillery, he served as a Sergeant-Major. Since he had attended Richmond College and had training as a lawyer, he sometimes defended his fellow soldiers in courts-martial. He became a professional writer post-bellum. He edited several national magazines, and published dozens of books about the war and the antebellum South. His writing skill is illustrated in the lively details of his narratives, which bring a fresh propinquity to the study of the War Between the States that all readers should appreciate.
