Berthold Auerbach, eigentlich Moyses Baruch (Pseudonym: Theobald Chauber) wurde am 28.2.1812 in Nordstetten/Schwarzwald geboren. Er stammt aus einer kinderreichen, verarmten jüdischen Familie, besuchte 1824 die Talmudschule in Hechingen, 1827 die Rabbinerschule in Karlsruhe zum israelitisch-theologischen Studium. 1832 begann er das Studium der Jura, danach der Philosophie in Tübingen, ab 1833 in München. Als Radikal-Liberaler und Mitglied der verfolgten Burschenschaften wurde er von der Universität verwiesen und verbüßte eine zweimonatige Haft auf dem Hohenasperg. Er schloß sein Studium in Heidelberg ab. Auerbach war mitGutzkowbekannt und wurde nur aus Not Schriftsteller. Er arbeitete als freier Schriftsteller in Weimar, Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin, Breslau und Wien. Auerbach starb am 8.2.1882 in Cannes.
