She finds a land shaped by the paradoxical tension between ancient beliefs and modern ideas, epitomised in her visit to the Nogi Shrine, built in honour of a general who committed ritual suicide in the 20th century following the death of the Emperor. The author also explores the evolution of Japan, from its emergence from centuries of isolation to its position as an economic powerhouse.
