Excerpt from Methods in Soil Analysis: Technical Bulletin
Much importance has been attributed in recent years to the analysis of soils for total constituents. The literature covering the -methods for such analysis, while rather exten Sive, is scattered, and in many cases the methods described are not well suited to rapid routine practice. In View of these facts it has been thought that the compilation and publication Of the methods used and in part evolved in the soils laboratory of the West Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station may be of value to others desiring methods which are rapid and at the same time sufficiently accurate to meet the requirements Of most soil investigations. The methods are presented in. Sufficient detail to permit their employment by those who have not had extensive experience in quantitative work.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a detailed look at basic methods used in soil analysis. It was initially written to assemble the techniques used and developed in the soil laboratory of the West Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station. The methods are presented in sufficient detail to permit their employment by those who have not had extensive experience in quantitative work. The book covers determining iron, aluminum, titanium, manganese, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, total nitrogen, total carbon, total sulfur, silica, carbonate carbon, lime requirement, nitrate nitrogen, and ammonium nitrogen. The author emphasizes eliminating difficulties encountered when determining silica in the same sample as the other elements, which has proven particularly advantageous in the West Virginia Experiment Station laboratory. The methods outlined depend on the decomposition of the sample by means of hydrofluoric acid and are open to possible objections. However, the subsequent procedure permits appropriate corrections. This book will be of value to those interested in developing and refining soil analysis techniques.
