This book advances the research into iterative methods for solving elliptic finite element problems on regions that have been partitioned into substructures. The author shows that certain of these methods are optimal and gives a full development of the theory for second order linear elliptic problems in the plane when using Lagrangian finite element approximations. The theory is then extended, using different mathematical tools, to general planar regions and arbitrary conforming Lagrangian finite element approximations. The text concludes with numerical experiments that show the methods perform very well in practice.
