Excerpt from Manipulus Vocabulorum: A Rhyming Dictionary of the English Language
The other work of our author appears to have been very popular in its day. It was first published in the year 1587, and was reprinted in 1596, 1608, 1632, 1644, 1654, and 1664, and its title is A Right Profitable Booke for all Disease, called the Pathway to Health. The preface is written in the same style as that to the Manipulas. The author defends himself from the blame attached to writing in the vulgar tongue, and at the same time sets up a plea for English. He charges those who think books should be written in hard or unknown lan guages, and thus hide the knowledge of health from the people, as guilty of malice exceeding damnable and devillish.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book stands as one of the earliest English dictionaries, and the first to organise its words by rhyming structure. Written by Peter Levins, an author about whom very little is known, this dictionary presents an invaluable glimpse into the English language of the 16th century. The author designed it as an aid for both poetry and pronunciation, and as such it contains thousands of words categorised into vowel and diphthong patterns. In addition to its role as a rhyming tool, the book further illuminates the history of specific words and phrases, their etymology and evolution. It also provides helpful contextual examples. Levins intended his work to be an accessible tool, and thus it is an excellent source for scholars studying the development of the English language. The book's deep exploration of etymology, pronunciation, and the role of rhyme in the construction of English makes it a significant historical artefact. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Seller Inventory # 9781333850029_0
