Synopsis
This book addresses the history of Syriac versions of the New Testament with a special emphasis on the Peshitta, an invaluable work for understanding how the Bible was understood in the early church. The author establishes that the Peshitta, the Syriac version of the New Testament, is not a uniform version and argues that its history can be traced through the ancient versions of the Greek New Testament. By comparing the different versions of the Syriac New Testament, the author identifies traces of different recensions and presents evidence of a later revision in the form of literal translations from the Greek added to the text. The author also argues that three of the Catholic Epistles (2 Peter, Jude, and 3 John) were added later to the three already present (James, 1 Peter, and 1 John).
