This book presents a selection of documents which locate Shakespeares Blackfriars playhouse, and trace its complicated history within the dissolved priory. Addressing the issue of whether Shakespeares Blackfriars was contained within the earlier theatre conducted by Richard Farrant, the author provides a detailed analysis of the available evidence. By close examination of the property deeds and leases connected to both theatres, this book re-examines the structural history of the playhouse and the role played by its owner and developer, Sir Thomas Cawarden. In doing so, the author provides a fresh perspective on the development of theatre in London during the early modern period, and establishes the physical dimensions of the playhouse.
