Synopsis
This book chronicles the early work of the American Colonization Society and its goal to send free people of color back to Africa. The author provides a historical vantage point from which to examine the conditions for free people of color in the United States during the early 1800s. As the author shares accounts from Johannes Sterreberg Rupt, an overseer responsible for purchasing cattle for the government, the underlying motivations for the free black community to seek refuge in the mountains, deserts, or become enslaved become clear, painting a vivid picture of the desperation and indignity they faced. The author chronicles the founding of the American Colonization Society and its early successes and failures, arguing that with enough funding, the society could successfully relocate and establish free people of color in Africa.
