From the Publisher

This was a world of wealthy merchants, handsome youths and pretty women, of lusty nuns and lecherous and greedy priests. They reflect the worldly realism of the town rather than the elevated idealism of the court. Full of sex, money, revenge and anti-clericalism, they draw a humorous, entertaining, bawdy and realistic picture of Florence and neighboring Tuscany in the early sixteenth century.

Firenzuola's witty style and fast-paced narration are literary achievements. The Tales serve as a bridge in literary history from the medieval tales to the picaresque novel. Here are the characters who stand between Chaucer's Handy Nicholas and Don Quixote.

About the Author

Agnolo Firenzuola (pseudonym of Michelangelo Giovannini) was born in Florence in 1493; he studied in Siena and Perugia before moving to Rome in 1516; from 1534 until his death in 1543 he lived in Prato. His Tales or Ragionamenti, published posthumously in 1552, remain his most important work. Other works include: Disacciamento de le nuove lettere inutilmente aggiunte su la lingua toscana (1524), La Trinuzia, I Lucidi, Dialogo delle bellezze delle donne, and Metamorfosi, a translation of Apuleius.
