This insightful and engaging new title in the Theatre & series explores the various connections between theatre and Islam. Drawing on both historical and recent examples to trace their relationship and offer a new perspective on a topical subject, this persuasive text argues against a long-standing assumption that Islam has worked in opposition to theatrical presentation. From the thirteenth century puppet plays of Ibn Daniyal to Islamic themes in twenty-first century productions, Theatre and Islam is chronologically wide-ranging and ambitious in its scope.
Ambitious yet concise, this is the perfect introduction for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Religious Studies, Islamic Studies, Middle Eastern Studies and Drama.

Marvin Carlson is Distinguished Professor of Theatre, Comparative Literature and Middle Eastern Studies in the Graduate Center at the City University of New York, USA. He has held several awards throughout his academic career, including the ATHE Career Achievement Award and has written several introductory theatre books, such as Theatre: A Very Short Introduction (2014) and Performance: A Critical Introduction (2003).
Given the book’s brevity, its scope is astounding, ranging from passion plays and folk traditions, to Islamic nationalist plays in the early twentieth century. Theatre and Islam is an invaluable contribution to the library of any scholar, student, or fan of world theatre. – Edward Ziter, New York University, USA
An exhilarating, enlightening survey of the historical, social and political significance of theatre across the Islamic world, from Morocco to Indonesia. – Katherine Hennessey, American University of Kuwait, Kuwait
