Wanted Sam Bass is the first book in a new series and something of a departure from my long novels. Most of my writing involves historical dramatizations, often featuring some little known or overlooked aspect of an otherwise familiar character or event. This series has one of those unexpected historical roots. People who study western history know of the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Few people know Pinkerton had a competitor. The Rocky Mountain Detective Association operated across the west in the latter nineteenth century. The Great Western Detective League series is loosely based on that organization. Some stories have an historical spine, like Sam Bass. Others fictionalize crimes actual or imagined. What the series delivers is a colorful cast of characters who compete to solve high profile cases. As was the case with Pinkerton, women play roles in these stories that go beyond the traditional western 'damsel in distress'.
Paul Colt's analytical insight, investigative research and genuine horse sense bring history to life. His characters walk off the pages of history in a style that blends Jeff Shaara's historical dramatizations with Robert B. Parker's gritty dialog. Paul's Boots and Saddles: A Call to Glory received the Marilyn Brown Novel Award, presented by Utah Valley University for excellence in unpublished work prior to its release in 2013. His Grasshoppers in Summer, received Finalist recognition in the Western Writers of America 2009 Spur Awards. Paul's work in western literature gives creative expression to a life long love of the west. He gets his boots dirty researching a story, whenever possible from the back of a horse.
