When Joe Teller, an aging research scientist from rural Pennsylvania, is murdered in New York City during a violent mugging, Dan Costa, the best of Manhattan’s homicide detectives, is assigned the case. He visits the remote town in the Green Mountains, interviews its people, and combs the secretive laboratory for clues, eventually concluding that the homicide was no accident. He uncovers a history of abandoned research projects, and murders on Chincoteague Island and the Jersey shore, all connected somehow to a mysterious property in the blue blood of Limulus, the horseshoe crab. Though distracted at times by a passionate affair, police politics, and the murder of his own father, Dan Costa ultimately finds evidence of a conspiracy involving highly successful professionals and elements of organized crime. Based upon a real town and historically accurate scientific research, the novel explores six months in the life of an exceptional but idealistic detective trapped in a world of increasing violence, greed, and hypocrisy.
