In the novel, Emery Bandine, a weary Confederate veteran and staunch Democrat when the carpetbagging Republicans come south, struggles with a rundown ranch and two small children. He vows the kids will never face the poverty he’s always known and that killed his wife. With his Mexican partner, he throws himself at the dry, impenetrable brush—the brasada of south central Texas, where longhorns found grass, water, and hiding places. Savage’s portrayal of the agony of men and horses as they are cut and thrown to the ground is visceral. The work—cornering wild bulls—is terrifying. But, over a decade, Emery makes a fortune driving his cattle to New Orleans and then to Abilene. He builds a fine house, puts up fences, and becomes a politician—this last to thwart those hoggish Republicans.
