Wealthy hedge-fund operator Gregory Breckenridge hires Florida investigator Harry Brock to find his missing wife, Afton. The police think that Breckenridge killed his wife so he could marry his mistress. Harry engages skiptracer Caedmon Rivers to help with the search, and she convinces Harry that Afton is still alive, hoping to cash in her investments. Harry continues his search and finds evidence that a wealthy friend of Afton’s may be involved in her disappearance. Then someone kidnaps Caedmon, rapes her, injects her with heroin, and leaves her for dead. There is plenty of action here, along with quirky characters, including Harry’s neighbor Tucker, a senior citizen who talks to his animals. Readers will also sympathize with Harry’s fear of intimacy, which keeps him from getting close to the attractive women who enter his life. An entertaining PI novel that will appeal to both hard-boiled and cozy fans. --Barbara Bibel
