Originally published as a five-part magazine serial in 1928, this is a western adventure with solidly built characters and a simple, straightforward story: newcomer to town rubs local tough guy the wrong way; tough guy steals newcomer’s horse; newcomer gets it back, meets beautiful woman who’s being threatened by tough guy; a showdown is inevitable. This is the kind of book that probably wouldn’t get published today; its characters are a bit too cut-and-dried for today’s tastes (you know the local guy is tough because his name is Tuffy), some of the language is a bit out of place (the dialogue of some of the Mexican characters is rendered in a faux dialect that isn’t quite racist but comes dangerously close), and there are some unplanned chortles (as when Tuffy and the newcomer, Curly, test their marksmanship by “shooting this bunghole while it rolls downhill”). Take the book in its historical context, though, imagining you’re reading it in the late 1920s, and you get a nicely told, traditional western story about good people, bad people, love, treachery, and bravery. --David Pitt
