PATRICK HENRY HUGHES was born with an extremely rare genetic disorder: arms that couldn't straighten, legs that would never be able to walk, and most devastating of all, blindness. He had been born with no eyes. His parents never gave up on their hopes for their son, determined that he grow up to be all that he could. Then one day, the extraordinary happened. At the age of just nine months, Patrick Henry began to play the piano. Soon, his exceptional musical talent emerged. In I Am Potential, twenty-year-old Patrick Henry and his father, Patrick John Hughes, share their incredible journey of defying disability against all odds and reveal the lessons in optimism learned along the way. Candidly written, I Am Potential is the story not only of Patrick Henry's remarkable life, but also of the bond between father and son demonstrating how, with faith, perseverance, and unconditional love, almost anything is possible to achieve.

Patrick Henry Hughes is a nationally known pianist, singer, and trumpeter, and has performed at venues as diverse as the Kennedy Center, the Grand Ole Opry, and the Orange Bowl. He and his father, Patrick John Hughes, are a two-person member of the University of Louisville Cardinal Marching Band. They have appeared on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Oprah, and ESPN. They live with their family in Louisville, Kentucky. Bryant Stamford, a professor at Hanover College, is author of a syndicated column in the Louisville Courier-Journal.
A 19-year-old Kentucky man born with deformed limbs and no eyes collaborates with his father (and with contributor Stamford) to describe how he became an accomplished musician and an inspiring model of personal growth. The result is an invitation to share this family's sorrow and triumph, and a challenge to listeners to work around their own weaknesses or disabilities and live life to its fullest. Narrators Paul Garcia, Malcolm Hillgartner, and Grover Gardner share the reading, and each is a skilled interpreter of the pathos and inspiration in the story. Rotating the narrating duties creates a strong dynamic: Three exceptional voice talents bring distinct sensibilities and views to the recording but also work together to give this heroic memoir impact and continuity.
