En esta obra la autora defiende el divorcio como la solución a una unión no deseada, cosechando a sus primeros detractores por su abierto feminismo. Dos mujeres nos relata la historia de un matrimonio joven (Luisa y Carlos) que tras sus primer año y medio en pareja se enfrentan al hechizo de Catalina, una mujer que comienza a ejercer sus encantos sobre el esposo, a tal punto que logra mantener una aventura, y quedar inconvenientemente embarazada. El aspecto notable de la novela, es la maestría con la que Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda reúne a estas dos mujeres en una misma habitación. El resultado es simplemente genial.

Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda (Camagüey, 1814 - Madrid, 1873), llamada coloquialmente «Tula», fue una escritora y poetisa del romanticismo hispanoamericano. Precursora del feminismo en España y una de las más grandes poetisas de la lengua castellana según la consideración de Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo. Está considerada, además, como una de las precursoras de la novela hispanoamericana.
