About the Author

Born in Dorset, England, Thomas Hardy (1840–1928) was an English novelist and poet whose criticism of the strict moral codes of Victorian society is best exemplified in his most celebrated novels: Far from the Madding Crowd, The Mayor of Casterbridge, and Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

Though schooled in London, and celebrated as a prize-winning architect, the young Hardy never felt at home in a city of social class division, or comfortable in his chosen profession. A student of the works of the progressive political theorist John Stuart Mill, Hardy returned to Dorset, married, and decided to devote his life to writing.
