Cracker Westerns are rip-roarin, action-packed, can't-put-'em-down tales set in the frontier days of Florida. They are full of adventure, real heroes, and vivid, authentic details that bring Florida's history to life.
In the spring of 1771, John MacKenzie arrives in British-ruled St. Augustine after a year of fur trapping. He is quickly drawn into an adventure that involves defending a young woman indentured to the powerful and treacherous James Tyrone. MacKenzie and Becky Campbell set out across the untamed Florida wilderness, accompanied by a crusty sailor named Blackpool Bobby and Jeremiah, a black slave-hunter. They are pursued by Tyrone's murderous trackers toward buried gold and a showdown on the windswept sands of the Florida Gulf coast.

Lee Gramling is a sixth-generation Floridian who lives in Gainesville. He is an admirer of the late Louis L'Amour and was inspired by the tales of the Florida frontier he heard from his grandparents.
These two well-written novels deviate from the commonplace Western in several aspects. Their backdrop is the Florida wilderness, and Gramling educates the reader about that environment without letting the lesson intrude on the plots. The male protagonists are larger-than-life yet believable, the women are strong-willed and capable, and the ne'er-do-wells are easy to hate. In Trail to St. Augustine , John MacKenzie returns to that 18th-century British colonial city after a year trapping and soon runs afoul of the local vigilantes because he intercedes on behalf of a young woman indentured to their leader. The couple join forces with an old sailor and a black slave-hunter, and the foursome is pursued across the Florida peninsula to buried treasure on the Gulf coast. The protagonist of Riders of the Suwanee , Florida native Tate Barkley, comes home in 1875 after making a name for himself as a hired gun in Texas and Arizona. Old feuds fuel violence when Barkley takes up a young widow's cause. Riders of the Suwanee succumbs, to a certain degree, to the hyperbole found in most Westerns, but the flaw does not spoil a good story. Both novels are recommended for public libraries.
